Mena Suvari stars in ‘Ted Binion Scandal’

InterviewsOn The WebSex & Lies in Sin City

Mena Suvari has played fictional characters who have turned heads — both young and old — in feature films from “American Beauty” to “American Pie.” None of those characters caused her as much concern as her role in the Lifetime movie “Sex and Lies in Sin City: The Ted Binion Scandal.” The actress and the filmmakers were cautious because the film is based on a true story.

“I was concerned at one point that … someone was going to come after me if they didn’t like my version of the story,” Suvari says. She accents the comment with a nervous laugh.

The role that gave Suvari so much concern was that of Sandy Murphy, a woman who becomes a stripper after losing all her money in Las Vegas. She catches the eye of Ted Binion (Matthew Modine), a Las Vegas mover and shaker with a checkered past. Their relationship and Binion’s drug addiction grow at the same rapid rate. Continue Reading…

InterviewsSex & Lies in Sin City

I found this little tidbit of Mena talking about the upcoming “Sex and Lies in Sin City”;

If a Las Vegas casino tycoon was killed by his stripper girlfriend and her alleged lover, some charges against them didn’t stick - which is why a new Lifetime movie about the case had to tread carefully, as did its stars.

Ted Binion’s flamboyant lifestyle, involving heroin and marijuana use, made his 1998 death from an apparent overdose not that far a stretch. Or, at least, not initially: Circumstances led authorities to decide it wasn’t a suicide and to arrest Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish, but the convictions were overturned by the Nevada Supreme Court. In a 2004 retrial, they were acquitted of murder but sentenced for conspiracy.

Based on the Jeff German book “Murder in Sin City” and directed by veteran filmmaker Peter Medak (”The Ruling Class”), the film also stars Matthew Modine (”Full Metal Jacket”) as Binion and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden (”Pollock”) as his sister Becky, shown in the film expressing many misgivings about Sandy.

“As a woman, it’s challenging to find interesting, meaty roles,” Suvari says, “and this is really an amazing story. I’ve always been fascinated by human behavior. Many times, people try to come up with a story that can be unusual, but you have enough twisted things that happen in real life.”

Sex and Lies in Sin City will be airring on  LifeTime TV on October 25th

Sex & Lies… In October

On The WebSex & Lies in Sin CityTV AlertsVideo Updates

Sex & Lies in Sin City will be premiering on the LifeTime channel on October 25th 2008 at 9 PM ET/PT.

In the long, colorful history of Las Vegas crime, one case stands out: the tumultuous, tortured romance of beauty-queen-turned-stripper Sandy Murphy (Mena Suvari) and reckless casino mogul Ted Binion. At first, it seemed like the kind of story Las Vegas was invented for: she was a beauty from the wrong side of the tracks, he was one of the most eligible bachelors in town, and together they found true love. But every Vegas tale has a dark side, and soon reports of drugs, guns, cash, and mobsters begin to soil this storybook affair. When Ted Binion turns up dead of an overdose, all fingers immediately point to Sandy, the beneficiary of his millions. And when her secret lover gets caught stealing from Binion’s hidden underground vault in the Nevada desert, the sordid facts of this malicious menage a trois finally begin to emerge. Based on the book MURDER IN SIN CITY by Jeff German.

MyLifeTime.Com has some videos available about the film - you have to be in North American to view them tho [which means I can't see them >:(] - if anyone can let us know what clips they are that would be great!
